Organizers with Escambrón Unido said hundreds of people formed a human chain Sunday along the Escambrón coastline to oppose a planned 950-car parking garage at Parque del Escambrón, according to a statement the group posted to Facebook.
The demonstration follows months of opposition to the project, which San Juan Mayor Miguel Romero has continued to advance despite that opposition.
Protesters allege the project poses flood risks to the area and have raised conflict-of-interest concerns involving the parking structure’s ownership group.
Sunday’s event follows a Sept. 27 protest announcement and comes after Romero signed the ordinance authorizing the project earlier this month over sustained community opposition.
