Surfers and other opponents of the Escambrón multi-level parking project plan to protest at the beach on Sunday, Sept. 27, arguing the proposed structure threatens the area during large swells.
Herminio Pagán Calderín, a surfer acting as a spokesperson for the group, has called on surfers from municipalities across the island to join the demonstration, set for 4 p.m. at “Plaza de los Surfers” at Playa La Ocho, part of the Escambrón beach area.
The protest follows Mayor Miguel Romero’s signing of Ordinance 55 earlier this month, which grants Smart Parking System LLC a 60-year surface right to build a $22 million, 950-space parking structure on the site. Opponents have argued the project lacks a completed environmental or traffic study.
