The Coffee, a Brazilian-founded coffee chain known for its minimalist, Japanese-influenced storefronts, has opened a location at 1367 Ashford Avenue in Condado, adding another specialty café to the neighborhood’s crowded coffee scene.
The Condado shop — listed by the company as The Coffee Ashford — is the brand’s latest Puerto Rico location, following its original 2025 launch in Old San Juan and Barceloneta. The local franchise is operated by Grupo Avilés, led by businessman Carlos Avilés.
The Coffee was founded in Curitiba, Brazil, by brothers Carlos, Luis and Alexandre Fertonani, with Puerto Rico real estate partner ARK Real Estate dating the company’s start to around 2017. The chain has grown internationally on a small-format model — compact stores, tablet-based ordering, and a black-and-white visual identity built around Japanese typography and design cues.
Menu prices at the Ashford location, per The Coffee’s website: a Pure Black double espresso for $3, Americano for $3.75, Macchiato for $3.35 and the chain’s signature True White for $3.90, plus specialty drinks including a Spanish Latte ($5.35), Matcha Latte ($5.80), Morning Matcha Latte ($6) and Iced Blueberry Matcha ($6.75).
ARK Real Estate, which represents The Coffee in its Puerto Rico site search, has said the brand favors spaces under 1,000 square feet in high-traffic spots — tourist districts, malls, hospitals and marinas — consistent with the compact Ashford Avenue storefront. ARK has also said the brand’s Puerto Rico stores use 100% Puerto Rican beans from Café Bosque del Pueblo in Adjuntas.
The Coffee’s original Puerto Rico investment, a $400,000 buildout of the Old San Juan and Barceloneta stores, created about 15 jobs, according to News Is My Business. The company has continued expanding on the island since; Avilés said in 2025 that a third location was already planned for Caguas.
The Coffee Ashford is open 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, according to the company’s own site and its Google Business listing. The space previously housed Cookie Plug, a cookie bakery chain that no longer lists a Puerto Rico location among its current stores.
