A broken insulator at a Santurce substation knocked out power to more than 25,000 customers across San Juan this week, LUMA said, in an outage that stretched into the afternoon for some residents.
LUMA executive vice president José Pérez Vélez said an insulator on a transmission line broke and fell onto another line, causing a short circuit that forced the substation to disconnect automatically.
The outage affected more than 25,000 customers at its peak, concentrated in Santurce and Hato Rey, with some San Juan residents without power into the afternoon before restoration was completed.
Pérez Vélez said the failure reflects the “critical” state of aging grid equipment that has gone years without replacement.
Some residents reported a flash of light in the area around 2 a.m.
