The National Weather Service has placed San Juan’s Atlantic-facing beaches, including Condado and Ocean Park, under a high risk of life-threatening rip currents from Monday morning through late Monday night, with surf building to about six feet.
The high-risk call came in NWS San Juan’s Monday morning surf-zone forecast, which called for roughly six-foot surf and east winds of 10 to 15 mph — conditions forecasters said make dangerous rip currents likely.
The risk is expected to ease to moderate Tuesday, with surf dropping to around five feet.
The forecast zone covers San Juan and Carolina beaches broadly and doesn’t break out individual beaches by name, so Condado and Ocean Park swimmers should assume the warning applies to their stretch of coast. A high-risk rating means dangerous currents are likely, not that beaches are closed.
Swimmers caught in a rip current are advised not to fight it directly — swimming parallel to shore until free of the current, then back to the beach, is the standard way to escape one.
