Puerto Rico’s consumer price index rose 3.8% in August compared with a year earlier, its highest year-over-year reading since May, according to the Department of Labor and Human Resources (DTRH).
The index reached 143.937, up 0.1% from July. Transportation costs rose 9.6% over the year, with public transportation up 17.3%. Food and beverages rose 2.6%, medical care 2.9%, and alcoholic beverages 4.9%.
The island-wide index doesn’t mean every household’s costs rose exactly 3.8% — the increase reflects a weighted basket of goods and services, and transportation and public-transit costs rose far faster than food or medical care.
