The Municipality of San Juan is accepting applications from small and medium-sized businesses for “Mercado San Juan Online,” a new program that will build free virtual stores for 20 selected merchants.
Mayor Miguel Romero announced the initiative Tuesday as part of the Explora San Juan digital ecosystem. Selected businesses will receive a basic virtual storefront, integration with electronic payment methods, shipping setup, technical support, and training in digital marketing, inventory management, and customer service.
“In San Juan, we want our merchants to have the tools to grow, innovate and compete in a constantly changing economy,” Romero said in a statement. “We have to help them expand their reach, take advantage of the digital economy, and be ready to reach new consumers inside and outside Puerto Rico.”
Pablo Rovira, director of the municipality’s Department of Economic Development and Tourism, said the goal is to help merchants who currently depend mainly on in-person sales establish an effective presence online. Eligible applicants include businesses already established in San Juan, San Juan residents, and businesses in the process of setting up operations in the city. Applicants must meet standard requirements including permits, a municipal business license, and up-to-date tax obligations.
Applications are open through Oct. 31 at explorasanjuan.com.
