The neighboring concepts at the San Juan Marriott combine Nikkei cuisine, cocktails, live entertainment and late-night options along Ashford Avenue.
Condado’s dining scene continues to expand beyond traditional stand-alone restaurants, with hotels along Ashford Avenue increasingly offering concepts aimed at locals as much as overnight guests.
At the San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino, two neighboring venues in the hotel’s lobby — Sakana and Azure Lounge — offer distinctly different ways to approach an afternoon or evening in Condado.
Sakana centers its menu on Nikkei cuisine, the Japanese-Peruvian culinary tradition that brings together Japanese techniques and ingredients with the flavors of Peru. The Marriott describes the restaurant as a mix of sashimi, ceviches, sushi rolls and other dishes drawing from both culinary traditions. Sakana is open daily from noon until 10 p.m.
The menu goes well beyond familiar sushi rolls.
Among the offerings recently highlighted by Sabrosía are a hamachi tiradito made with ají amarillo and leche de tigre, several poke bowls, pork belly bao buns and an assortment of rolls combining ingredients such as yellowtail, scallops, spicy crab, eel and avocado.
The restaurant also carries its Peruvian influence into the bar. Cocktails include drinks built around pisco alongside gin- and citrus-based selections, giving Sakana enough of a beverage program to work as either a full dinner destination or a first stop before heading elsewhere for the night.
Only a short walk away inside the same property, Azure Lounge takes a broader approach.
Open daily from 11 a.m. until 1 a.m., Azure functions as the Marriott’s all-day lobby bar and lounge, with an international menu, cocktails and a setting that becomes increasingly nightlife-oriented as the evening progresses.
Its food menu is designed to accommodate everything from a drink and a quick bite to a more substantial meal. Recent selections have included ropa vieja served over crispy rice tostones, tuna tartare, truffle fries, hummus, charcuterie and locally inspired options such as Guavate sliders made with roasted pork.
There are also tacos, steak, salmon and other international dishes, allowing Azure to occupy a different lane than Sakana’s more focused Japanese-Peruvian menu.
Cocktails are a major part of the lounge’s identity. The current selection incorporates ingredients including Puerto Rican rum, mezcal, bourbon, tequila, parcha, guava, pineapple and espresso. Azure also offers wine, sparkling wine and beer.
On selected nights, live music adds another element to the lounge, while the Stellaris Casino sits immediately nearby for guests looking to extend the evening without leaving the property.
That proximity may be the most interesting part of the pairing.
Rather than treating Sakana and Azure as competing restaurants, the Marriott has created two concepts that can work together. An evening can begin with sashimi, a poke bowl or a few rolls at Sakana before moving into Azure for cocktails and music. From there, the casino or the rest of Ashford Avenue is only steps away.
The arrangement also reflects a broader evolution underway in Condado’s hotel dining scene. Properties that once relied heavily on conventional hotel restaurants are increasingly building specialized bars, restaurants and entertainment concepts capable of attracting people who are not staying at the hotel.
For Condado residents, that means another neighborhood option where dinner and nightlife can happen under the same roof without necessarily committing to a formal night out.
Sakana and Azure Lounge are located inside the San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino at 1309 Ashford Avenue in Condado. Sakana is open daily from noon to 10 p.m., while Azure Lounge is open daily from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m.
